5. Up your liquid volume. No, in this case weâre not talking about a good bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir. Weâre talking about water. Lots and lots of water. And make sure itâs filtered (if you donât remember why, review the information on toxic water on page 19). The extra fluid will help you start your Cleanse early. We suggest you buy a 24-ounce refillable bottle and, starting in the morning, make sure you empty and refill it (via drinking) at least four times a day. Not crazy about plain water? Squeeze a lemon or lime into it. Just keep drinking (and peeing). If your urine is nearly as pale as water, youâre doing great.
6. Cut out the dairy. That means milk, ice cream, cheese, yogurt, butter⦠anything that comes from a cow, goat, or sheep. Simply put, there is no place for dairy in a raw food/juice program. Thatâs because a big part of our Cleanse philosophy is that you should incorporate more fresh, âliveâ foods into your diet and eliminate processed and difficult-to-digest items such as meat and dairy. This doesnât have to be a permanent change (although youâll feel much better overall if it is), but it does need to be a key component of the pre-, during-, and post-Cleanse time frame. Plus, as you probably know, many of us are lactose intolerant, meaning we canât digest the sugar in dairy. This leads to all sorts of unpleasant intestinal issues such as constipation and gas. Keep away from soy milk since is a highly acidic food. It is also highly processed, and can increase levels of mucus in your intestines.
7. Eat gingerly the day before. See Steps 1 through 6 for the specifics. Why? If you donât prepare properly, itâs not necessarily that disaster will bring you to your knees. Itâs a matter of how you will feel. If you eat a particularly dense meal the night before you begin your Cleanseâthink meat (even fish) and heavy starches like French friesâyour body will be in heavy digestion mode the following day, ready to tackle another dense meal. So when it encounters the light, simple, raw juice instead, you may end up feeling woozy, nauseated, and extremely hungry because your body has been in work mode for so long. Those digestive juices are still churning, but now they have nothing to break down.
To prep for the Cleanse, I reduced my caloric intake the day before by eating fruit and fresh fruit juice. It helped me to become accustomed to the Cleanse and ease into the program.

To make it even easier for you to prepare for the Cleanse, weâve prepared the following three-day menu for you leading up to the Cleanse itself. All the recipes can found beginning on page 135. Remember, the focus is on gradually transitioning from âdenserâ foods that require more digestion to lighter foods that will âexitâ your system quicker.
If youâre into making your own juices, we always recommend a green juice for breakfast. This
